How to Measure the Quality of Titanium Fasteners
I’m a supplier in the titanium fasteners industry. Over the years, I’ve learned that understanding how to measure the quality of titanium fasteners is crucial, not only for us as suppliers but also for our customers. In this blog, I’ll share some key aspects and methods to evaluate the quality of titanium fasteners. Titanium Fasteners

1. Material Composition Analysis
The first and most fundamental step in measuring the quality of titanium fasteners is to analyze the material composition. Titanium fasteners are typically made from different grades of titanium, such as Grade 2 (commercially pure titanium) and Grade 5 (Ti – 6Al – 4V, an alloy).
We use advanced spectroscopy techniques, like optical emission spectrometry (OES) or X – ray fluorescence (XRF). OES works by exciting the atoms in the titanium sample, causing them to emit light at specific wavelengths. By analyzing these wavelengths, we can accurately determine the elemental composition of the titanium. For example, we can check if the titanium meets the requirements for the specific grade. In Grade 5 titanium, we need to ensure that the percentages of aluminum (Al) and vanadium (V) are within the defined range (about 6% for Al and 4% for V).
XRF, on the other hand, irradiates the sample with X – rays. The atoms in the sample absorb the X – rays and then emit secondary X – rays with energies characteristic of the elements present. This method is non – destructive, which is very useful when we don’t want to damage the fasteners during testing.
2. Mechanical Property Testing
Tensile Strength
Tensile strength is a critical mechanical property of titanium fasteners. It measures the maximum stress a fastener can withstand while being pulled apart. We use a universal testing machine to conduct tensile tests. The test specimen is prepared according to specific standards, such as ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) standards.
The fastener is held at both ends of the testing machine, and a gradually increasing tensile force is applied until the fastener breaks. The maximum force recorded during the test is divided by the original cross – sectional area of the fastener to calculate the tensile strength. For high – quality titanium fasteners, the tensile strength should meet or exceed the specified values for the particular grade and application.
Yield Strength
Yield strength is the point at which a material begins to deform plastically. It is important because a fastener that deforms plastically under normal operating loads may lose its clamping force or cause problems in the assembly. Similar to the tensile test, we use a universal testing machine to measure the yield strength. We can determine the yield strength by looking for the point on the stress – strain curve where the material starts to deviate from elastic behavior.
Hardness
Hardness is another important mechanical property. It affects the fastener’s resistance to wear, deformation, and galling. There are several methods to measure the hardness of titanium fasteners, such as Rockwell, Brinell, and Vickers hardness tests.
The Rockwell test is the most commonly used in our industry. It involves applying a minor load first, followed by a major load. The depth of the indentation made by the indenter is measured, and the hardness value is read from a scale. A consistent and appropriate hardness value is an indication of good – quality heat treatment and material integrity in titanium fasteners.
3. Microstructure Examination
The microstructure of titanium fasteners can provide valuable information about their quality. We use metallographic techniques to examine the microstructure. First, a small sample is cut from the fastener and then prepared through a series of steps, including grinding, polishing, and etching.
Under a metallurgical microscope, we can observe the grain size, phase distribution, and any potential defects in the microstructure. For example, in titanium alloys, we may look for the presence of a homogeneous alpha – beta phase distribution. A uniform grain size and proper phase distribution contribute to good mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of the fasteners.
If the grain size is too large, it may lead to reduced strength and toughness. On the other hand, if there are abnormal phases or inclusions in the microstructure, it could indicate problems in the manufacturing process or material purity.
4. Corrosion Resistance Evaluation
Titanium is known for its excellent corrosion resistance, but the quality of this property can vary depending on the manufacturing process and material composition. We conduct several tests to evaluate the corrosion resistance of titanium fasteners.
One of the most common tests is the salt spray test. Fasteners are placed in a chamber where a salt – water mist is continuously sprayed onto them. The test is run for a specified period, usually several hours to days. After the test, we examine the fasteners for any signs of corrosion, such as pitting, rusting, or discoloration.
Another test is the immersion test, where the fasteners are immersed in a specific corrosive solution for a certain time. We can then measure the weight loss of the fasteners to quantify the corrosion rate. High – quality titanium fasteners should have a very low corrosion rate and show minimal signs of corrosion after these tests.
5. Surface Finish Inspection
The surface finish of titanium fasteners is also an important aspect of quality. A smooth and defect – free surface is not only aesthetically pleasing but also affects the fastener’s performance. We use visual inspection and surface profilometry to evaluate the surface finish.
Visual inspection is carried out under proper lighting conditions. We look for any surface defects such as scratches, cracks, or porosity. These defects can reduce the strength of the fastener and also act as initiation points for corrosion.
Surface profilometry measures the surface roughness of the fastener. It provides quantitative data on the height variations of the surface. A controlled surface roughness is important for applications where the fastener needs to form a good seal or where it is in contact with other components.
6. Dimensional Accuracy Measurement
Dimensional accuracy is crucial for titanium fasteners. They need to fit precisely into the assembly to ensure proper functioning. We use a variety of measuring tools, such as calipers, micrometers, and gauge blocks.
For example, the diameter of a bolt, the pitch of the threads, and the length of the fastener all need to be within the specified tolerance limits. If the dimensions are out of tolerance, the fastener may not fit correctly, leading to problems such as loose connections or excessive stress on the components.
7. Fatigue Resistance Testing
In many applications, titanium fasteners are subjected to cyclic loading. Fatigue resistance testing is used to evaluate how well the fasteners can withstand repeated loading without failure.
We use a fatigue testing machine to apply a cyclic load to the fastener. The test is run for a large number of cycles, and the number of cycles until failure is recorded. This data is then used to generate an S – N curve (stress – number of cycles curve), which shows the relationship between the applied stress and the number of cycles to failure. High – quality titanium fasteners should have good fatigue resistance, meaning they can withstand a large number of cycles under a given stress level.
